Request a Presentation

The Reading & Learning staff at the Center for Academic Success can come visit your class/office and work directly with your students.

Reading critically is a concern for many professors at FIU, and we would be happy to design a presentation that would complement your syllabus or provide a generic session that would address a broader range of skills.

Take a moment and review our palette of presentations and determine which one would be practical for your particular course. If you would like a presentation designed for reading in your particular course, call the Center for Academic Success at 305-348-2441 (MMC) / 305-919-4044 (BBC).

Types of Presentations

  • APA Review

This workshop is designed for students who need to format their research papers according to the American Psychological Association (APA).

Basics in formatting a paper, citations, and references are discussed, along with the changes in APA that came with the 6th edition. Workshop duration is approximately 90 minutes in length.

  • Exam Preparation

This workshop reviews the essentials of studying for an exam. It begins with discussions on time management, study locations, and study strategies.

Topics like test anxiety and stress are also discussed along with methods to mitigate them. Workshop duration is approximately 45 minutes in length.

  • Reading Potpourri

This workshop addresses the basic concerns in reading: fluency, comprehension, and study skills. Strategies are taught in note-taking, metacognition, and vocabulary.

Introductions are made in other areas like preparing for upper-division exams, grammar, and punctuation. Workshop duration is approximately 60 minutes in length.

  • Grammar Intensive

This workshop can be condensed into 1 workshop; however, it is typically offered as a 5-week, (one-hour) workshop series. The “intensive” addresses the most common grammatical errors in academic writing, e.g. misplaced modifiers, sentence structure, tenses, etc.

These workshops have been offered to both students and FIU staff members. Students can bring their copies of The Everyday Writer as a reference. While placing your request, specify if you would like the condensed version or the intensive version.

  • Punctuation Shop

Designed for both students and staff, this workshop covers the basic rules of English punctuation. Participants discuss common punctuation errors in writing and become acquainted with applying the most appropriate rules to the messages they are trying to convey.

Workshop duration is approximately 90 minutes in length.
